A New Source Of Help For ZAP

We are so pleased that Joe Braitch (recently retired engineer and troubleshooter) and his wife Mary have recently thrown their lot in with ZAP; their support being both financial and practical.  Not only have they been extremely generous in more ways than one, but Joe has undertaken to help with the setting up of the new Jambiani Autoworks and to keep a watching brief over the Jambiani Fundi Workshop on their impending visit to Zanzibar.  Joe has many years of experience which he will bring to bear on ZAP’s behalf, and he and Mary are lugging 2 extra suitcases with them, courtesy of British Airways, filled with quality tools for our motor mechanics.  Joe and Mary hope to officially open the Jambiani Autoworks in February as official ZAP representatives.

Not only that – but Joe has purchased a new motor for the Jambiani water pump which ‘blew up’ after the dreadful power outage last year.  He, together with Mr Pandu and Hans Ehrentraut (good friend and employer of ZAP fundis who is now permanently based in Zanzibar), are to oversee the installation of the new motor and control board, trying their best to ensure that the future of the water pump (funded by kind ZAP supporters, and donated to the village) is secure and trouble free.

Mr Vuai is also looking forward to Joe’s visit and the depth of experience he will bring to the whole JFW project – we thank him very, very much for his input and will keep our supporters abreast of his progress in Jambiani.

ZAP Website Takeover – ZAP’s New Blog!

The ZAP website has proved an invaluable tool, making a big contribution to ZAP’s success, both in fund-raising, gaining general support and as a medium for publishing news stories.  We have now moved the ‘hosting’ of our website to InnerShed (www.innershed.com), a long-established web company in Norwich, and we feel confident that we shall be in very good hands.  They are experts at raising ‘social media awareness’ for organisations such as ours, and have advised us to start a ZAP ‘blog’.  Watch this space!

Here It Is!

Students Write To Say Thank You To ZAP!

Recently, we have received some letters of appreciation from ZAP students in Zanzibar and further afield.  Here is an extract written by Nemshi, who gained a top scholarship to an overseas University, with examination results that were the highest in the whole of the island:

‘Hi Mama Janie….I started my course on November 1st and I frankly appreciate your support since I have come all this way from Jambiani.  I am very proud of you and Mr Pandu…what you do is critically important to any community…we are together for any question of development of Jambiani and Zanzibar in general, and I am very happy since my teacher Mr Vuai told me that you remembered me.  Thank you so much.’

…and here is another from a Form VI pupil’s email:

‘Hello Mama Janie…..I am very happy now.  We Form VI students stay all together in the same house….making good preparation for our exam…. due to ZAP and its crucial help for us, we promise we will pass our exam.’

It is worth remembering that without the financial support ZAP gives these young people they would absolutely not be able to continue with higher education.  ZAP rents their boarding house, helps out with living and traveling costs by means of annual bursaries, and pays the fees which all the students have to find for examinations and university applications.

The girls of Headington school have contributed significantly to this project, as have Mark and Izzy Wren, and we are grateful also to Mr Vuai and Mr Pandu without whose constant watchfulness and pastoral care ZAP’s higher education students would have much less chance of success.

London Marathon Quiz Night – Sophie de Winton

As some of you will know, Sophie de Winton is our nominated runner in this year’s London Marathon (http://www.justgiving.com/Sophie-de-Winton)  As well as training hard for this, her first marathon attempt at the ‘mature’ age of 48, Sophie and her husband Tom, have started fund-raising in earnest.

Sophie and Tom are organizing a Quiz Night in Brancaster Village Hall on Wednesday 2nd February, for which ZAP has already received many generous donations.  Hopefully, the questions won’t be quite as hard as they were in our Grand Quiz Night last year; it is bound to be great fun, especially as ZAP Directors will be taking part this time!
