JAMBIANI WATER PUMP (North villages) A huge achievement
Thanks to the wonderful response by ZAP supporters to our urgent appeal last May, the villages of Jambiani now have a plentiful and reliable supply of clean, fresh water. It is difficult for us to imagine the enormous difference that this has made to the health and welfare of approximately 6,000 villagers in a desperately poor rural community. Mr Pandu, who was so instrumental in managing the herculean task of organising the massive installation (in a deep cave down a horrendously rough 3 km track in the forest) writes in a recent email:
‘Regarding The water Project, the people of Jambiani can never thank ZAP enough for that as they wash, they drink and use the water for many other things... I thank you again personally and all ZAP trustees for the people of Jambiani.’
Martin and Avril took a trip to the site in January and were staggered at the size and complexity of the project. Their photographs below will hopefully convey some idea of this.
Perhaps you will remember, too, the even bigger Water Project for the southern sub-villages of Jambiani which was masterminded and managed by Mr Vuai two years ago. The cost of this huge venture, which included supplying and laying several kilometres of pipe-work, as well as building an enormous concrete water tank were supplemented by contributions from ZAP funds, together with a lump sum from John Humphry’s Kitchen Table Charities Trust.
We trust that all of you who gave so generously will feel justifiably proud!
