Update on Jambiani Community Academy

During our visit this summer it was a real pleasure to visit the Academy for the first time and to see what an excellent job Mr Vuai has done. His neatly typed timetable, pinned to the notice board, revealed a full programme of academic and IT tuition which is already in full swing. Many more laptops, kindly donated in the UK and carried out by the Headington party, have greatly augmented the computer department, and the ZAP Internet and Office facility is working well. The ‘Kids classes’ are very popular at weekends, and Form IV students in Jambiani now have a proper schoolroom for their after-school lessons – these are seen as absolutely critical to their academic progress, and continue well into the small hours.

We must pay tribute to the generosity of its proprietor and owner, Mr Vuai. His selfless contribution, together with Mr Suha, to the promotion of higher education in Jambiani is now of many years standing, and is quite remarkable. While ZAP pays him a salary for managing and administering both the Academy and the Jambiani Fundi Workshop, he gives of his time to his students entirely free and his dedication to a brighter future for Jambiani children deserves much praise. We are delighted to have helped him provide this new facility in the community, and delighted too that he has agreed to become an official ZAP Director in Africa.
