Two highlights of this summer's visit: Firstly, we were thrilled when Wadhifa a young male nurse whose four year training was fully funded by ZAP - arrived for his first day at the clinic. Secondly, two days before we were due to fly home to the UK, we received an urgent request from a documentary film crew from California...
From initial plans in September 2009, the visit to Jambiani of 11 CAS4ZAP girls (from Headington School, Oxford in their International Baccalaureate year) and 4 teachers went extremely well. ZAP Jambiani students from Form V and VI in Stone Town came back to the village for a week to be hosts and partners for the visiting 'team' ...
Under the supervision of Mr Vuai, the fundis continue to be fully occupied, either on short-term contracts or on-the-job training. However, we have had to make a major change in plans for the motor mechanics to work from custom-built premises in the village. Read a full report here...
The new Academy goes from strength to strength, and we were able to see at first hand the work of Mr Vuai and Mr Suha in both academic and IT tuition. This excellent facility is used by locals of all ages...
This summer we were able to check on progress at the new ZAP 'boarding house', which provides accommodation and study areas for ZAP-sponsored students in further education in Stone Town...

Zoe Thompson is taking part in the Great North Run on 19th September, running a half-marathon for ZAP.

Andrew, Pat, Janie and Janet are just back from a highly successful field trip to Zanzibar. We were delighted with the progress of our slimmed-down projects particularly in the area of higher education where we give support to nearly 20 students from Jambiani currently studying in Stone Town and living in the new ZAP Boarding house.
Last summer Lucy Kerr, a teacher at Ludgrove Preparatory School, was part of the amazing North2South sponsored cycle ride. A glutton for punishment, Lucy has now undertaken to do a sponsored swim on 20th June.....
Plans are well under way for 11 sixth form girls from Headington School, Oxford to visit Jambiani for a week in July. They are working hard to raise funds to support their contemporaries in high school in Zanzibar, and ZAP has organised for them to be partnered and mentored by students of the same age and ability.
Isobel Ramsay, a friend of Pat and Janie's from Norfolk, travelled to Zanzibar with a party of medical students from the UK in April. They spent some time at Mnazi Moja Hospital, and then based themselves in Jambiani. Isobel has written this interesting and informative report....
Emily Gerard-Leigh, one of ZAP's original volunteers completed the London Marathon and raised over £2000. It was a particularly gritty effort as she was suffering from a heavy cold; we are so grateful to her and to all the ZAP supporters who so kindly sponsored her THANK YOU!
Izzi Wren's father wanted her to experience at first hand what life is like for her contemporaries living in very different circumstances in rural Africa, so he took her to Jambiani during the Easter holidays. The contrast between her fortunate circumstances and those of Jambiani school girls is brought out in a moving account of her impressions...................
Great news! After three months of terrible hardship, power has been restored to the island......
For the first time, Jambiani has its own Community Academy, which also houses ZAP's Internet and lending Library. The decision to focus on higher education and free private tuition is a big step forward...
The news from Jambiani continues to be extremely grim. Still no power = no water. There are more cases of cholera in the village this week, with the death of a 19 year old man....
ZAP supporters who are on our mailing list, will know that a major health crisis has developed in Zanzibar because there has been a complete power cut to the whole island since December 10th. The power comes from mainland Tanzania via a system which has completely broken down on the Zanzibar side. Efforts to repair it have failed, and full restoration of power is not now expected for a long time......
An extremely successful Quiz Night was held in Norfolk at the end of January, with 190 participants. A grand total of £8,000 was raised and great fun was had by all...
A big welcome to Mark Coley, recently retired financier, who has joined the board of ZAP Directors. He and his wife Julie won a holiday to Jambiani in the Golf Day raffle three years ago. Mark's wisdom and business experience will be invaluable, and he hopes to visit Jambiani this autumn.
An innovative Tradesmen's co-operative has now been established in Jambiani to form a central base for the seven village young men whom ZAP has supported through three years of technical training. A chronic shortage of skilled workers able to take advantage of any economic growth prompted this ground-breaking initiative. The first fully qualified plumbers, electricians, motor mechanics and refrigeration/aircon engineer have started work already, amid glowing reports from employers.
